It is with sadness that we report that Dennis Baker OBE, passed away on Thursday 19th August 2021. His long fight with cancer finally took its toll, but he was unceasing to the last in the dignity, courage and determination he portrayed. Dennis gave it his all, whatever he did. His career within the animal welfare sector started when he became CEO at Wood Green in June 2000. From a highly successful career in the RAF, he brought with him a commanding presence, an assuredness in decision-making and most notably a panache and humour that became his trademark. His arrival at Wood Green and the skills and style Dennis brought came exactly at the right time. In his 14 years at the Charity, he moved it on and in every dimension. People will remember him for his style, but he also had a financial astuteness that provided a sound financial platform to enable the Charity to keep building. On his retirement and reflective of his contribution as an exemplary CEO, he was appointed Vice-President by the Board; an accolade richly deserved. So good was Dennis, that they named him Vice-President twice. It was of great pride to him that he was also Vice-President of the ADCH. As someone who never missed a meeting, he was generous with his knowledge, energetic in his passion for animal welfare and always supportive of others. These attributes, together with his humour, always remained no matter how difficult things got for him. Dennis had lots of friends; it was easy for him. The families of Wood Green and ADCH will miss him. We are one though in wishing our condolences to his wife Nerys, and his family. Thank you, Dennis, you will always remain in our hearts and minds. |
