Our Rescue Centre Manager is at the heart of improving the lives of animals in need by leading and motivating a team of staff and volunteers to care for a range of animals including dogs, cats, small furries, reptiles, and hedgehogs to a high and safe standard in our animal rehoming centre. The Centre Manager is responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient daily management of the Centre, in line with BPR policies and objectives.

Your Part in the Team

  • You will manage, support and develop Centre staff, volunteers, and animal foster carers.
  • The Centre Manager reports to the Charity Manager directly.
  • You will work collaboratively with the BPR shop teams, volunteers, Trustees, and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Through effective recruitment, training, support and supervision, you will ensure the Centre has a full complement of skilled staff and volunteers who can provide the necessary knowledge and experience for the appropriate and responsible care and welfare of all animals admitted to the Centre or placed with foster carers to support the work of Borders Pet Rescue.
  • Overall responsibility for the care and welfare of all animals housed at the Centre, or with foster carers on behalf of the charity, and for seeing that veterinary procedures are arranged as necessary.
  • Always ensuring maximum use of all available facilities, including kennels, cattery, and working in close collaboration with foster carers and other animal charities. Lead responsibility for the decision to admit and rehome any animal in our care and for carrying out the charity’s behavioural assessment for all animals, implementing and monitoring appropriate care plans and ensuring that specialist behavioural assessments are arranged in exceptional cases.
  • Reviewing and updating Centre policies and procedures relating to animal care and health & safety. Completion of administration for the rescue centre, including, but not limited to staff rotas, reports, stock ordering, banking processes, record keeping etc.
  • Role modelling excellent customer service when dealing with members of the public and partner organisations, and actively promoting the work of the Charity through traditional media, social media, local interest groups, events, and business networks.

Other Duties

  • To adhere to Borders Pet Rescue policies and procedures and to always maintain confidentiality.
  • To undertake any other reasonable duties required for the sustainability of the Centre and /or as reasonably directed by the Charity Manager.

The Person

  • You will be self-motivated, organised, enjoy working with people, and be resilient to the demands of managing an animal rehoming centre. Honest and reliable. Flexible with a positive attitude. Able to work on own initiative and to make day to day decisions as required. And of course, you will have a genuine concern for animal welfare and enthusiasm for the work of the charity.

Essential Experience and Skills

  • A proven record of practical experience working with a range of animals in a managerial or senior supervisory role, ideally in a rescue centre environment.
  • Ability to work with dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, reptiles, and hedgehogs.
  • SVQ or equivalent Level 2 in Small Animal Care or equivalent experience.
  • Strong knowledge of animal behaviour, training and welfare. Demonstrable observation skills regarding physical and behavioural changes in animals.
  • Proven experience of managing people and ability to develop skills in team members.
  • Organisational skills with the ability to plan and prioritise workload for self and the team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build external relationships.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in record keeping and organizational management.
  • Excellent IT skills (Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint etc).
  • Flexible in respect of working patterns and hours. The Centre is staffed 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
  • Full car driving licence, and ability to drive a van.
