Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm with no out of hours or weekend working

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Veterinary Clinic Management Team as Head Veterinary Nurse leading a team of Vet Nurses and a Clinic Nursing Assistant within a Clinic in an animal rescue centre environment. This role is to ensure the provision of a high standard of veterinary nursing care, excellent customer service and the maintenance of a hygienic, safe and comfortable environment.

Our Clinic is a purpose-built small animal charity clinic accredited with the RCVS. We have a great range of facilities and equipment including a digital x-ray, ultrasound, endoscopy, ECG and a laboratory. We have a unique and varied caseload including:

  • Free basic veterinary service for outreach clients on low income
  • Supporting injured and/or stray animals
  • Shelter medicine for onsite animal rehoming centre
  • Wildlife triage
  • Welfare casework for the RSPCA Inspectorate

We operate Monday to Friday for owned animals and strays. There is no weekend, bank holiday working or out of hours working.

About the role:

Key responsibilities include:

  • The management of the nursing function in the theatre, preparation room and animal accommodation areas of the Clinic
  • Organising the day-to-day operation of the clinical areas, maintaining excellent clinical and service standards in conjunction with the Principal Vet
  • Line management of the Veterinary Nurses and Animal Care Assistant
  • Ensuring cleanliness and safety of the theatre, prep room and ward areas of the Clinic, ensuring that a hygienic, safe and comfortable environment is maintained at all times
  • Customer service and the oversight of the reception, waiting room and dispensary areas of the Clinic ensuring excellent clinical and service standards are maintained
  • Taking part in the review of clinical and customer service standards developing, and implementing new protocols as necessary
  • Administration associated with pricing and invoicing of clinical work, including debt recovery

About you:

To be successful in the role you should have:

  • Current RCVS registration or registered equivalent qualification
  • Significant post qualification experience working in a veterinary hospital or clinic
  • Proven line management experience, leading and motivating teams. Previous experience as a Head Veterinary Nurse is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and oral
  • An ability to work autonomously with limited supervision
  • An ability to demonstrate a high level of clinical judgement
  • Dedication to animal welfare, but with a realistic attitude towards animal welfare in an animal rescue environment.
  • Previous experience in a shelter environment or delivering charitable clinical services would be advantageous, but not essential.
